Denise Smith from Glasgow took the plunge and signed up for a challenge of a lifetime - to trek the Great Wall of China. She raised over £3,500 for CLIC Sargent prior to the trek and is fundraising to help more children with cancer and their families.
In October 2003, Denise's son Graeme was diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent specialised cancer treatment and received support from CLIC Sargent. Graeme is now a second year student at Glasgow Caledonian University, studying Bio-sciences. He is doing really well and is back to playing golf. Graeme’s family are all very proud of him.
Denise said: "This challenge was important for me because I want to raise funds to help other families who are experiencing similar battles. It's about giving something back. I have ran 5ks, 10ks and half marathons over the years for many charities, not knowing who or how I was helping anyone. But I am now aware of the impact fundraising has on helping individuals who are less fortunate."
"The Trek was a life changing experience and I would definitely do it all again. There were varying fitness levels but we all managed the climb. I have had a lot of positive feedback from my colleagues. Maybe they respect my fearlessness. I’m not at peak fitness level but I still managed it. I met some great people and we are already planning another challenge! I would definitely recommend it to others."
