Mums from the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC), in Sunderland overcame their fear of heights on Sunday 21st of September in order to help raise funds for CLIC Sargent. They were joined by other daredevils from across the region who not only had to abseil 45 feet but also had to cross the glass roof first in order to do so.

The three women – Louise Hardy, Donna Surtees and Victoria Thompson - who all work at the North East BIC decided to take the leap and take part in a sponsored abseil off the National Glass Centre roof after reading about the Charity’s work.

Louise Hardy explains how she roped her colleagues into taking part: “A friend forwarded me an email about National Yummy Mummy Week (20th – 28th September) and the work the CLIC Sargent charity does. When I realised that one of the events was scheduled to take place at the National Glass Centre I jumped at the chance to get involved.

"Although I have to admit I nearly fell over when I realised it involved abseiling off the building! I am afraid of heights but when I mentioned it to Donna and Victoria we all decided that our own fears were nothing compared to what the children and their families have to go through, so down all our names went.  Our aim was to try and raise £100 each, in fact we ended up raising over £200 each!”

Dee Richardson, CLIC Sargent Event Fundraising Manager said: “It was great to see so many dedicated people turn up to abseil on Sunday to kick start National Yummy Mummy Week. Some were extremely frightened, but they all overcame that fear in order to raise money for a really worthwhile cause. So far the National Glass centre event has raised nearly £4,000. We are extremely grateful to the people who took part and the sponsors, the Hadrian branch of Foresters”.

The next abseil organised by CLIC Sargent will take place from the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough Sunday 12th and Sunday 19th October. Participants will have to brave the 160 feet.

For more information please contact Dee Richardson on: 0113 2307902 as soon as possible to secure a place. top of page
