A Cleveland school choir, The Conyers Singers, sang their hearts out last month to raise much-needed funds for CLIC Sargent.
The 25-strong choir, aged 11 to 16, from Conyers School in Green Lane took centre stage on Saturday March 6, for a singing competition run as part of the Darlington Music Festival.
The talented group of singers were crowned the winners of the senior choir class for their rendition of the gospel song entitled Oh Wont You Sit Down. All the money raised through sponsorship and donations on the day will go towards the school’s latest fundraising efforts for Practice-a-thon Music – one of our national fundraising initiatives. The fundraiser is designed to encourage children and young people to practice their music or host an event while raising money for families affected by childhood cancer.
To date The Conyers Singers have raised more than £650 for the cause since December 2007 which includes the money raised through the competition and their recent Christmas carol concert.
Nikki Lycett, music teacher at Conyers School said: “This is the second year we have taken part in Practice-a-thon Music. I think it is a fantastic fundraising initiative because the pupils get so much out of it. They are practising for a purpose and to know that they are raising money for other children and young people whose lives have been turned upside-down by cancer really spurs them on to raise lots of money.”
Local Event Fundraising Manager for CLIC Sargent, Dee Richardson, said: “Today another ten families will hear that their child has cancer. But right now CLIC Sargent can only help two out of three of them. With help from more schools, like Conyers School, signing up to take part in fundraisers like Practice-a-thon Music we can be there for each of every one.”
Practice-a-thon Music has been running for several years and with the help of musical children across the UK it has raised over half a million for children and young people with cancer. Those who take part can choose to keep 25 per cent of the money raised for their school or music group or donate the full amount to CLIC Sargent.
