Newlyweds Nettie and Gary Pilcher shunned the usual gift list of towel bales and a toaster at their recent wedding and instead asked guests to donate to a cause close to the family’s heart.
This together with a quiz night held at the couple’s pub The Hurdlemakers Arms in Woodham Mortimer, raised a fantastic £1,000.
The couple decided to fundraise for CLIC Sargent as Nettie’s niece battled leukaemia but sadly died eight years ago aged six and three quarters.
“We have been supporting CLIC Sargent for many years after our tragic family loss,” said the couple. “It was an easy decision for us to ask for donations instead of wedding gifts in honour of Louise’s memory."
“A big thank you to all our family and friends who helped us achieve this fantastic amount. Louise was a very selfless little girl, always thinking of those less fortunate than herself even towards the end. She will always be in our hearts,” they added.
“Asking guests to donate what they would have spent on a wedding gift to charity is a really selfless act,” says Karen Roberts, Community Fundraising Manager. “On behalf of the charity I would like to thank Nettie and Gary, and their wedding guests, for their generosity. And not forgetting all the big-hearted quiz fans who helped to raise money for families whose lives have been turned upside down by childhood cancer.”
