Vintage Ferguson TEF 20, Jack, is leaving his home in Beyton and motoring out on a tour of the country to highlight the work of CLIC Sargent supporting families affected by childhood cancer.
Local tractor enthusiast and Ferguson Club member. John Selley rescued Jack from the scrap heap in 2006 and lovingly restored the 1950s vehicle to its former glory – with a special mission in mind. Inspired by the courage of a local teenager and the support her family received from CLIC Sargent, John decided to use Jack to help raise awareness – and some pennies – for the charity.
The Mayor of St Edmundbury,Councillor Robert Cockle waved Jack off on his travels from stunning surroundings of Ravenwood Hall Hotel. Jack then made tracks to his first show at the Ferguson Club AGM/AMW in Oxenhope, West Yorkshire, in April. Kenny Gill will take Jack from Oxenhope and they will call on local agricultural shows and use the tractor’s unusual looks to promote the essential support provided by CLIC Sargent for families whose lives have been turned upside down by childhood cancer.
John says, “Since Jack’s debut outing in 2007 he has been seen at numerous local shows and he’s usually the centre of attention – well he does stand out from other tractors by being painted so brightly! Most importantly he gets people talking and asking questions about CLIC Sargent which is the real reason behind this ambitious tour.”
Jack will be travelling from Suffolk to Aberdeen via the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway before heading to the Orkneys and the Western Isles. He will also hopefully be stopping off at Malcolm Sargent House in Prestwick, one of the charity’s holiday homes for families affected by childhood cancer, and then moving on to North Yorkshire.
“Jack will visit as many shows en route as possible and we hope kind-hearted people will sponsor him by the mile, or for the number of shows he visits. I would like to say a huge thank you to local businesses Claydon’s Tyres, Goffin Signs, Witham Oil & Paint Ltd and Beyton Garage for helping Jack get on his way,” adds John.
Local Community Fundraising Manager Karen Roberts says, “Jack’s trip sounds tough for a vintage tractor but he’s taking this on to highlight what can be a traumatic and lengthy journey families have to face when a child has cancer.
“He’ll be hard to miss with his bright fuchsia makeover and gold lettering! Thank you to Ravenwood Hall Hotel for giving him a great send off – good luck Jack!”
