When we heard about CLIC Sargent's Barry Sheene Memorial Motorcycle Challenge, the opportunity was too good to pass up. We'd be visiting various race tracks with routes, accommodation and back up all in place, but also raising money for children with cancer at the same time. This made up our minds. We signed up there and then.
The Event:
With bulging rucksacks and tankbags we set off to Brands Hatch. It's not every bike tour that starts there. We had a fantastic time - the routes were extremely well planned, avoiding long dull motorways stints and taking in a huge variety of scenery and places of interest. Everything was sorted out - so all we had to concentrate on enjoying the biking. Overall it was great introduction to touring and it's difficult to beat as a biking experience.
Fundraising:
To fundraise, we ran a few events including pub quizzes, fishing competitions, a karaoke night and we even persuaded the local Indian restaurant to lay on a buffet night. Mates were happy to come along for a night out and spend a few quid.
Once you start, it’s surprising how new ides come to you. CLIC Sargent was very helpful -providing a resources pack and a contact to help us develop our fundraising. To our great surprise, we ended up raising 50% more than our initial target. It was hard work - but well worth it to know we'd helped children with cancer.
