Under 21s support CLIC Sargent

Before England's Under 21s got down to their first training session ahead of their friendly with Poland in Wolverhampton, they were joined by two young Wolves fans to help announce The FA's new charity partnership with CLIC Sargent.

Steven Smith and Adam Lovack, both teenagers, suffer from cancer but receive support from CLIC Sargent.

"I'm a big football fan so it's great to meet the players at the training ground and then see them in action against Poland on Tuesday," said 17-year-old Steven.

Steven, who was diagnosed last September and has been having chemotherapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham ever since, was a keen footballer before he became ill and hopes to get fit and back on the pitch soon.

Adam, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in 1999, is currently sitting his GCSEs and was delighted to meet the players. His father Stuart said: "After Adam became ill he spent six months on a ventilator in hospital. He then returned home about a year ago and has been making progress. We've seen a big change in his health."

England Under 21s Coach Stuart Pearce welcomed the pair to Wolves' training ground where the team were preparing for their friendly at Molineux.

"When a young person is first diagnosed with cancer their life changes forever. We wanted to lend a hand to the thousands of youngsters in the UK who have to battle cancer and offer them hope through football."

He added: "The FA has committed to supporting CLIC Sargent throughout the year, not just through a donation, but also by providing free tickets to matches for their young people and by offering advice on how survivors of cancer can get involved in football activities." top of page
