What is Payroll Giving and how does it work?

Payroll Giving, also known as Give As You Earn, is a HM Revenue & Customs scheme that enables employees to donate tax free through their pay to any charity in the UK.

On each payday, an amount of your choice is deducted by your payroll department and sent to CLIC Sargent. Your donations are taken before tax, meaning that for every £1 you give it will only cost you 80p (60p if you are a higher rate tax payer) – the taxman will pay the rest.

What are the benefits for employees?

Payroll giving is an easy, tax-effective way to give to charity – so it costs employees less to give more. For example, if you want CLIC Sargent to receive £10 every month and you pay the basic tax rate, it will only cost you £8 as the gift comes out before you are taxed. The system is flexible, giving you full control as your gift is arranged through your own workplace payroll department.

What are the benefits for employers?

Payroll giving is a great way for companies to demonstrate commitment to the causes that their employees care about. It is quick and easy to set-up and administer and in the UK over 10,000 employers operate the scheme. Payroll giving can also aid retention and recruitment of staff, and enable them to generate a sustainable income stream to charities.

What your money will buy

£5 per month means that a CLIC Sargent Social Worker could be there soon after diagnosis, talking to a family one-to-one. Every family is different, so we assess their individual needs and tailor our services to suit them.

£8 per month means a young person who has (or had) cancer or leukaemia could go on an activity weekend. After months in hospital it helps them restore self-confidence, regain independence and rebuild a social life

£10 per month could provide a day’s professional training for one of our care staff. This will ensure that they are equipped to help children with cancer and their families, whatever it takes.  top of page

" I would strongly recommend the Give As You Earn scheme as it is easy to do, can be tailored to your own requirements and significantly increases the amount of money the charity receives. If you feel passionate about a good cause this is the easiest and most effective way to support it. " Anonymous, Payroll Giving Donor
