Why is it important to have a Will?
Many people work hard all their lives to make sure their loved ones are secure and happy. An up-to-date and accurate Will is the only way to make your wishes crystal clear, and continue to take care of your family after your lifetime.
As well as ensuring your family are looked after a Will also ensures that the causes you support can also be remembered. Leaving a Gift in your Will to CLIC Sargent will not only secure future support for children with cancer, it may legitimately reduce your own family’s liability for Inheritance Tax too.
top of pageDo I need to use a solicitor?
There are many products in shops aimed at helping people to write a Will at home without having to get professional legal advice. However, by using a solicitor or qualified Will Writer who has experience of Will writing you can be assured that your intentions are correctly recorded to carry out your wishes after you have gone.
Your solicitor will also check that the correct wording and charity information is recorded to ensure that the causes you support in your lifetime can benefit from your gifts in your Will.
top of pageHow do I find a reputable solicitor?
One of the best ways to find a solicitor is through recommendation from friends and family. Alternatively you can find a solicitor through the Law Society at:
- www.lawsociety.org.uk (England and Wales)
- www.lawscot.org.uk (Scotland)
- www.lawsoc-ni.org (Northern Ireland)
All practicing solicitors are required to be registered with the Law Society.

Firstly you need to consider the type of gift that you would like to give. Once you have decided, simply contact your solicitor to advise him that you would like to amend your Will. This will involve adding an extra document to your existing Will. This is called a codicil.
top of pageI’ve left a gift to you in my Will but it’s under the old charity name (CLIC or Sargent Cancer Care for Children). Is this OK or do I need to change my Will?
Provided that the old charity names, and registration details are correct we will still be able to benefit from your bequest. However, it is worth checking and could be better to ensure that our current charity name and registration details are included in your up to date Will.
top of pageAre there any tax benefits to leaving a gift in my Will to CLIC Sargent?
If you leave an estate above a certain value, it may be subject to Inheritance Tax. The value of your estate liable to Inheritance Tax may change over time. Currently charities are generally exempt from inheritance tax on bequests made to them in Wills. However, please do discuss possible ways of minimising the tax burden on your estate with your solicitor or financial advisor.
