Keen biker Symor Skilbeck, from Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is gearing up for a unique 10-day motorbike challenge and is calling on locals to sponsor him in a bid to raise thousands for CLIC Sargent.
The 50-year-old motorbike enthusiast has signed up for CLIC Sargent’s 2010 Barry Sheene Memorial Motorcycle Challenge and hopes to raise £2,650 to help children and young people with cancer, and their families. He will join around 30 other bikers setting off from England on 11th July. As part of Team Sheene, Symor will cruise along open roads and coastal routes through Denmark and Sweden, before finishing at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany.
“I am taking up this challenge to raise money for CLIC Sargent, spend time with other motorbike enthusiasts and honour the memory of our last Moto GP world champion,” says Symor. “I’m lucky enough to own two Ducati motorcycles, an ST4s and a S4R Monster, but I haven’t decided which bike I’m going to ride just yet,” he adds.
The annual motorcycle challenge, named after legendary British biker and CLIC Sargent supporter Barry Sheene, has raised over £400,000 in the five years since it launched and attracted more than 150 participants. Following Barry’s death from cancer in 2003, the challenge was created to celebrate his achievements in the sport, as well as raising vital funds to help children and young people with cancer.
Symor is staging a sportsman dinner in his home town of York, attended by Barry’s friend and team mate, Steve Parrish.
“Over the past five years the Barry Sheene Memorial Motorcycle Challenge has become a firm fixture in the biking calendar,” says Henry Street, CLIC Sargent’s Challenge Events Co-ordinator. “There’s a real sense of camaraderie amongst the challenge participants – or Team Sheene as they’re now known!
Symor has been really creative with his fundraising and I’m sure the sportsman dinner will be a huge success. There are still some spaces places left to join Symor and Team Sheene on the ride, so if you are interested please do get in touch”, adds Henry.
