Despite the recent warm weather, Emily Marples (11), from Burgess Hill in West Sussex has been turning her thoughts to Christmas having won a Christmas card competition, organised by CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity.
Emily decided to enter after seeing the competition on the CLIC Sargent website. She says: “I love drawing and painting so thought I would enter the competition. I’m so pleased to win. I can’t wait to see my drawing on the Christmas cards. I’ll be showing them to my friends as soon as I get them - even if it is a little early!”
Emily’s sister, Alice, eight years old, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2003 and her family were supported by a CLIC Sargent nurse. Their mother, Sarah, says: “When Alice started her treatment we were introduced to our CLIC Sargent nurse, Francis, who would visit us at home. This meant, rather than having to make lots of trips to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, Alice could have her bloods taken at home, making life a bit more normal for her and the whole family. I really don’t know what we would have done without Francis, he was really supportive and a great person to talk to when I had any concerns or worries about Alice.
“I’m so pleased for Emily and it’s a great way for her to be involved in the charity that has helped her sister and us as a family so much.”
Emily’s winning design, which features a wintry scene with joyous carol singers, will be printed and turned into packs of cards that will be available from September through the CLIC Sargent mail order catalogue, CLIC Sargent shops or the charity’s website. The cards will be £3.50 for a pack of 10.
Last year, CLIC Sargent raised £150,000 through the sale of its Christmas cards. This money helped the charity provide ongoing care and support for the 10 children and young people diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia every day in the UK.
