CLIC Sargent has issued the following statement in response to the European Court of Justice initial decision on Sharon Coleman.

CLIC Sargent Chief Executive Dr Carole Easton said: “Sadly Sharon Coleman is not alone in being torn between her commitment to work and caring for her sick child.

“As the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent knows the huge practical and financial impact that a child’s cancer diagnosis can have on a family – with the extra costs of travel, accommodation, childcare, food and clothing.

“Almost half the parents CLIC Sargent spoke to in its survey of families affected by childhood cancer have not had an automatic right to time off. Some lost their jobs altogether.”

Dr Easton continued: “Some employers do get it right, offering planned, paid leave and career breaks for employees with caring responsibilities. This initial decision by the European Court represents a great step for carers, and I hope that through its new carers strategy the Government will ensure better rights are available to all parents caring for a child with cancer.”
