A group of friends from Newry will be pulling on their running shoes and taking part in the Newry City Marathon and Half Marathon on Monday 25th May to raise money for CLIC Sargent.

Teachers Ciaran Mackin, principal of Saint Oliver Plunkett’s Primary Forkhill, John White, principal of Saint Joseph’s Ballymartin, and Tony Keeley, teacher from Saint Malachy’s in Castlewellan, will be looking for full marks in the half marathon. They will be joined by friend Gary Beattie a civil servant from Newry who will be taking on the full marathon.

The group are all putting their best feet forward to help families whose lives have been turned upside down by childhood cancer, and are encouraging others to join them in the CLIC Sargent running team.

“This is my second half marathon and everyone at the school is really getting behind me and our group,” says Ciaran. “I know they’ll keep us on track with the training regime! I’m looking forward to the camaraderie of running the marathon as part of the CLIC Sargent team and would appeal to anyone thinking of taking part, or who has already signed up but not yet chosen a charity, to come and join us.”

“We are keen to recruit runners for our team taking part in the marathon, half marathon and fun run on Bank Holiday Monday,” says CLIC Sargent’s local Community Fundraising Manager Naomi Conway. “These events are both mentally and physically challenging. But what better motivation to get you across the finishing line than knowing the money you raise will help provide vital care and support for children and young people with cancer and their families.”

Each week in Northern Ireland two children or young people are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia.
