Today the Government unveiled the NHS Constitution. Children and young people were left out of the NHS Constitution and CLIC Sargent believes children’s health issues should be taken more seriously by the Government.
The principles outlined in the Constitution are said to apply to everyone entitled to use the NHS – this of course includes children. Yet, the constitution states that there are different rules for children but the full extend of these is not clear.
CLIC Sargent also believes there needs to be a children’s version of the NHS Constitution.
Dr Carole Easton, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent, demonstrates its important and says: “The recent news story of Hannah Jones showed that children and young people are not able to exert their full right to makes choices about their health care. The constitution does nothing to ensure that children who can, are able to be fully involved in any decisions affecting their lives.
“Those treating our children also have a responsibility to treat them in a way that is suitable and appropriate to their age.
“Children have rights and responsibilities too and it is time children and young people were given the rights they deserve.”
