Thirteen-year-old Liam Fairhurst from Soham, Cambridgeshire, has been recognised for his phenomenal fundraising efforts for CLIC Sargent by receiving the Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year award at an industry ceremony. Liam has raised more than £150,000 for the Charity in just 18 months and his amazing achievement was celebrated at the Institute of Fundraising National Awards held in London.
CLIC Sargent’s newest Patron, BBC Breakfast’s sports presenter Chris Hollins, hosted the event, which recognises outstanding achievements in the fundraising field. Liam received a standing ovation from the 750-strong audience when he took to the stage to receive his award in front of a selection of the most influential and well-respected fundraisers and figureheads from across the sector.
Liam was diagnosed with cancer in his left leg in 2005 and further tests showed that it had also spread to his left lung. He started fundraising for CLIC Sargent with a sponsored one mile swim after undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and an operation to remove the tumour.
Through his fundraising Liam has met lots of celebrities and high-profile figures, the most notable being his friend Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Gordon Brown, then Chancellor, presented Liam with a Diana Award in 2007 and he was so impressed by him he praised his fundraising work in his first speech at the Labour Party Conference in September 2007.
It was by auctioning a special bottle of House of Commons whisky donated by the Prime Minister that Liam surpassed his £150,000 fundraising target in May 2008.
CLIC Sargent is extremely proud of Liam’s achievements and have organised an extra-special thank you for him and his family.
