CLIC Sargent urged the public to email their local MPs and write to the Prime Minister as part of the Charity’s Support at School campaign. Thanks to the efforts of CLIC Sargent supporters and those who have had cancer whilst at school, the Government has agreed that better support is needed for children with cancer and other illnesses to help them whilst at school.

Sophia Loizia, age 17, from London says: “I went to Westminster last week to tell the Prime Minister and MPs about the struggle I face at school having undergone treatment for cancer. I am thrilled the Government sat up and listened to my experiences.

“There are hundreds of children and young people like me, who every day have to balance school work with cancer treatments. I now urge the Government to turn their promises into actions, so we can get the help and support we so desperately need.”

Sarah Talbot Williams, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent, adds: “CLIC Sargent is delighted the Government has pledged to take action to support sick children at school. We want to see all NHS Trusts, Local Education Authorities and schools working together to ensure that all children and young people with cancer receive the support they need to return to school and fulfil their potential.

“At CLIC Sargent, we know keeping up with education is important to children and young people with cancer. Going back to school not only helps them lead as normal a life as possible, but also helps them cope better with the challenges of cancer treatment. 50% say they need help, but worryingly CLIC Sargent found that two out of three weren’t getting the support they need, including access to home tutoring.”
