A group of intrepid fundraisers from Essex are pulling on their walking boots and getting ready to pound 70 miles of footpaths around the Isle of Wight in aid of children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent. The twelve brave trekkers will be striding out from Cowes on Wednesday 3rd September, and are urging locals to get involved by joining them for a day’s walk or cheering them on along the route.

The six-day walk has been organised by CLIC Sargent’s Colchester and Tendring Fundraising Committee to raise money to help children and young people with cancer, and their families. Starting from Cowes the group will head anti-clockwise around the island walking, on average, 13 miles a day. They will be stopping in Newtown, Totland Bay, Brightstone, Ventnor and St Helens for a well-deserved night’s rest before arriving back in Cowes on Monday 8th September.

“The Isle of Wight is a beautiful place to explore on foot and I’m sure our walkers will thoroughly enjoy trekking around the island,” says Karen Roberts, CLIC Sargent’s Community Fundraising Manager. “They will need all the support they can get as they battle blisters and tired feet so please do give them a cheer, or add to their collection buckets, if you see them on route!”, she continued.

Currently four families from the Isle of Wight are being supported by CLIC Sargent, two of which have stayed at CLIC Haven in Southampton, one of the Charity’s seven Homes from Home in Southampton.  The home is close to Southampton General Hospital and offers free self-catering accommodation to families while a child is undergoing treatment on the ward.  Families can stay together in a homely environment where they can make meals, watch TV and relax – vital for mums, dads and siblings who would have to travel a long distance to and from hospital.

“CLIC Sargent provides all round care for children and young people with cancer, and their families.  The money raised by this walk will go directly to help families whose lives have been turned upside down by childhood cancer,” Karen adds.
