16 year old Megan Blunt

Award winning author, sixteen year old cancer survivor Megan Blunt, joined double Olympic gold medal winner Dame Kelly Holmes to carry the Olympic Flame across London on Sunday 6 April, as part of the worldwide Beijing Olympic Torch Relay.

The CLIC Sargent young people’s ambassador was selected as a torchbearer following an incredible few years for the Essex school girl. Diagnosed with bone cancer in 2004, Megan chose to write a guide to surviving treatment in memory of her best friend from hospital, Nathaniel Burke, who lost his battle with cancer in August 2006.

Her book, Chemotherapy, Cakes and Cancer - an A-Z guide for children living with cancer, was published last March by CLIC Sargent. Since then thousands of children with cancer and their friends and families have benefited from Megan’s humorous tips and practical advice on cancer treatments and hospital stays.

Megan said: “I didn’t think anything could match being awarded a “Child of Courage Award” from JK Rowling at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, so I am thrilled and amazed to have been chosen as an Olympic torchbearer.  As well as studying for my GCSEs, I am committed to improving the lives of children with cancer through my role as young people’s ambassador for CLIC Sargent.”

Geoff Thaxter, Director of Services at CLIC Sargent, said: “Megan is a truly remarkable and inspirational young lady. She has taken what positives she can from her traumatic experiences of cancer and is now using them to help other young people who are facing the same uncertain future that she once did. In her role as ambassador, Megan gives so much of her time and energy to help CLIC Sargent promote the many issues and difficulties that face young people with cancer.”

Thaxter continues: “The Olympic Games is a wonderful global institution and I am delighted that Megan will be representing children and young people with cancer and CLIC Sargent on Sunday.”
