Home > About childhood cancer > youth > Help yourself >When you are first diagnosed, you may just hear your Consultant say the word 'cancer' and then not take anything else in. That's really common!
After that first appointment you may want to know more about your illness and how it is going to be treated. One way to get more information is to ask your Consultant. But what are the best questions to ask?
Some young people have helped us put together a list of “I wish I’d asked that” questions, which may help you make the most of your meeting with the consultant. They are:
- What are my chances of getting better?
- How many other young people have this type of cancer?
- Why did I get this cancer and why now?
- What is the best treatment for cancer for me?
- Where can I get this treatment?
- How long will my treatment last?
- How long will I have to stay in hospital for?
- Will the treatment hurt?
- What am I not going to be able to do?
- I've got a holiday/school trip booked - will I still be able to go?
- Will I still be able to go out with my friends/go to school?
- Will I be able to have children?
And you can ask the consultant to put everything in writing for you!
And remember, if you don't quite understand the answer - ask again. Your Consultant wont mind answering the same question over and over again - if it will help you to understand everything better.
