message: Hi There,
I know that chickenpox is a risk for children with cancer but there doesn't seem to be much information about why or how it is a problem. Can anyone tell me about their experiences with this. How worried should I be??
My son is 3 has ALL and. His little sister has recently been exposed to chickenpox and may well develop it in the next 10 to 20 days, just when he is due to start his second intensification period. Typical. Hopefully all will be ok but I just want to know what to expect.
Thanks in advance for any replies

message: hey there,
my son has leukemia also. this is alarming when your told any viruses, ie chickenpox measles etc to get in touvh immediately with docs.
but just tolet uknow what we've been told. when chickenpox was around our family at christams time we paniked. because it is scarey!! because no one explains what will happen. anyway the doctor said first of all it must be direct contact with sumone who has it. and two- you inform the your cancer doctor staright away and your son will get an antibiotic injection or antibiotics in the hickman line to be safe. with leukemia you will know their immune systems are rubbish, or none exsistant(when neurophenic) so they do pick things up a lot worse than you or me would. so its really not to scare you ts just really to prevent them from becoming even more ill. i hope this has helped in sum way. love mandy xx
