General hospital amenities

Yorkhill is very well-equipped. Facilities include a restaurant located on the first floor, a snack bar, and coffee shop/E-café. Two shops in the main entrance sell newspapers, magazines, sweets, toys, stationery and much more between them. Here you will also find the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation shop selling a number of promotional items relating to the hospital. 

There is a Lloyds TSB cashpoint machine. Vending machines are found in the main entrance and near the restaurant, and payphones throughout the hospital. Yorkhill also boasts a cinema and hairdresser.

Other facilities include a patient travel desk (to arrange having your expenses reimbursed), a family support and information centre, chaplaincy and an interpreting service.

There is a volunteer service contactable on 0141 201 6977, and a family crèche for children aged 1 – 8 years old contactable on 0141 201 6856.

Located just west of the city, Glasgow city centre is only a 5-10 minute drive from the hospital. However, there are plenty of other facilities to be found locally, such as a Post Office, banks, social security benefits agency, newsagent, shops and supermarkets.

Local attractions nearby include the Museum of Transport, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and Kelvingrove Sports Arena.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Glasgow Central railway station is approximately two miles from the infirmary. The station area is well served by buses that will travel to the infirmary area. The nearest local train station is Partick, just off the Dumbarton Road. For more information visit www.spt.co.uk

Underground: The nearest Underground station is Kelvinhall on Dumbarton Road; this is about a 5-7 minute walk away. For more information visit www.spt.co.uk

Bus: The nearest bus stop is Kelvin Hall or Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery across the road. A number of buses use these bus stops and you can find out specifically which ones by telephoning Traveline Scotland on 0870 608 2 608 or  by visiting www.travelinscotland.com

Some of the buses that use these stops include the following numbers: 6, 8, 9A, 16, 18, 42, 57, 62, 64, GCT 49

Parking on Site: Car parking is available at Yorkhill and attendants on duty will be happy to provide directions or advise you on where to park. It is important to note that due to limited space there are restricted car parking facilities and it is not always possible to find a space in the hospital grounds.

There are 24 disabled parking bays located outside the Outpatient Department.

Oncology ward details

General: Paediatric Oncology – Schiehallion Ward

No. of Beds: 18 individual rooms and two double bedded rooms.

Age Range: 0 – 17/18

Additional Information: All of the cubicles have en-suite facilities. All individual rooms are equipped with a plasma TV, Freeview box and a Playstation.

Ward facilities

Play: There is a playroom that has two play specialists on hand. The room is a very good size and is well-equipped with lots of toys and arts. There is also an adolescent unit which has computers, stereos, TVs and videos.

Learning: A schoolroom is available on the ward, where lessons take place Monday to Friday from 9am – 3:30pm. However, lessons can also be taught by the bedside. This is mainly focused towards primary school children. There is one teacher available in the schoolroom. For teenagers, teachers for specific subjects will visit the ward to provide work and tuition.

Other Facilities: For the parents there are three bedrooms, and a parents’ sitting room and a kitchen.

Ward routine

Meal Times: Breakfast is flexible with cereals on offer to patients. Other meals are at fixed times - lunch is at 12pm and dinner 5pm.

Rounds: Ward rounds are conducted in the morning, usually around 9:30am.

Visiting Hours:  Visiting hours are open for parents.

Visiting hours for other visitors are limited to between the following hours:
· 2pm – 4pm
· 6pm – 8pm top of page

Accommodation for families

One parent is able to stay next to the bedside of the child on a sofa-bed. There are three parents’ rooms on the Schiehallion Ward where the parents are able to stay.

CLIC Sargent also offer accommodation in Cruachan House, the Home from Home. The house offers free accommodation to families. The comfortable and well maintained accommodation is self catering and offers communal kitchens, sittings rooms and a play room. Bookings are made through the ward team.

The following accommmodation is also available:

  • Ronald McDonald House - 31 bedrooms for the whole hospital, however ITU and HDU have priority.
  • Accommodation Services, Yorkhill Hospital.
