General hospital amenities

A range of facilities are available at Yeovil Hospital. These include a League of Friends shop, a restaurant serving hot and cold food, and a coffee bar in the outpatient clinic. There is also an on site chapel and numerous payphones located through the hospital.

The hospital is within walking distance from the town centre, which has all of the main high street shops, banks and a Post Office.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Yeovil Penn Mill station is 1.5 miles from the hospital. The station is located just outside the town centre.  To reach the hospital from here you need to walk through the centre of Yeovil. The most direct bus service is the number 2, which leaves from Lyde Road (two minutes from the station) and arrives at York Place (approximately a four minutes from the station). The number 2 service runs every 30 minutes.

Bus: From the centre of Yeovil the best route to take is the number 1 bus. This leaves from the bus station and arrives in Higher Kingston. This service runs approximately every 20 minutes. For more information visit www.firstgroup.com or call: 0193 547 6233.

Parking: Car parking is available on site for a charge and there are roads nearby where parking is free for up to two hours. Yeovil hospital is also within walking distance of the town centre car parks, many of which have a lower hourly charge rate then that of the hospital.

On site parking charges are as follows:
· Up to 1hr - £1.50
· Up to 2 hrs - £2.50
· Up to 3 hrs - £3.00
· Up to 4hrs - £4
· 5 to 6 hrs - £5
· 7 hrs plus - £8 top of page

No. of Beds: 14 beds in a bay, 7 cubicles and 1 Rainbow Suite, a cubicle specifically for a child.

Age Range: 0 to 18 years

Additional Information: The Rainbow Suite is equipped with an en-suite and pull-down bed for a parent, a TV, DVD player and computer.

Ward facilities

Play: The play leader is available to sick children and their siblings from 8am to 2pm. There is a play area on the ward that is well-equipped with multi-age toys.  A Playstation is also available.

Learning: There is a well-equipped schoolroom. Sessions run Monday-Friday from 9am -12noon and follow school terms as set by Somerset County Council. Staff will make arrangements for home tuition for children within the Somerset area and will also make contact with the child’s own school. They will accept children of school age up to 16/18 years and pupils can sit for their GCSEs here. Tuition will also be given on the wards.

Other Facilities: There is a roof garden for the children who are encouraged to use this facility if they are well enough.

Ward routine

Meal Times: These are at set times. Generally breakfast is at at 8am, lunch at 12pm and supper at 5:30pm.  Generally, oncology patients are able to eat on a more flexible basis.

Rounds: The consultants on call carry out the rounds twice daily, generally once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

Visiting Hours: Visiting hours are open for immediate family members. General visitors are welcome between 8am and 8pm only.

Accommodation for families

The children’s beds all have pull-down beds for parents. In the Oncology Ward there is an ‘Adult Only’ cubicle with a sofa bed, lounge and shower. It also has facilities for making tea and coffee, enabling parents to rest, eat and drink in this room. There is also a parents’ day room/sitting room near the children’s ward. However this room is shared by the whole ward.

Parents meetings/outings and children’s activities are arranged infrequently by a CLIC Sargent care professional. The CLIC Sargent social care professional is based in Taunton, Musgrove Park Hospital. Telephone: 01823 342 704.
