General hospital amenities

Amenities include Theo’s Restaurant and snack bar and a WRVS coffee bar in the main entrance and vending machines located throughout the hospital.

There is also a chapel and prayer room available for parents and staff.

The hospital is near the main University of Sheffield campus and opposite Weston Park, which has a museum and an art gallery as well as open parkland and children’s play area.  Broomhill is the nearest small shopping centre; 10 minutes walk from the hospital, where amongst other amenities are a supermarket, sandwich shops and diverse food outlets who will deliver to the hospital.

The city centre is a 25 minute walk away and there are frequent buses from outside the hospital to Broomhill and the centre. Meadowhall Shopping Centre is easily reached from the hospital by tram.  The nearest stop is a short walk away. A map of Sheffield is provided in the information pack given to all parents and children attending the haematology and oncology unit.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Sheffield station is in the city centre two miles away. From the bus station (a short walk from the train station), take the number 40 bus that goes straight to the hospital or you can get a taxi for around £10. For more information go to www.nationalrail.co.uk

Bus: The hospital is very well served by public transport.  For more information visit www.sypte.co.uk

· From the Sheffield Interchange, Bus 40 runs every 10 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes in the evening.
· From High Street in the city centre, Bus 51, 52 and 120 run every 6 minutes by day and every 12 minutes in the evening.
· From Dore, Bus 30 runs every 30 minutes by day and every hour in the evening.

Tram: This goes to both Meadow Hall and the city centre. Take the Yellow or Blue tram to the University stop. Services run every 10 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes in the evening and on Sundays.

Parking on Site: There are two small Pay-&-Display car parks for parents and visitors at either side of the main entrance. Disabled badge holders park free. Spaces are limited and the hospital suggests that families use public transport wherever possible.

Car parking charges are as follows:
· Up to 2 hrs - £1.50
· 2 to 4 hrs - £2.50
· 4 to 6 hrs - £5
· All Day - £8

Oncology ward details

General: Paediatric Oncology Ward – M3

No. of Beds: 14 inpatient beds and 4 day care beds (including 6 cubicles).

Age Range: 0-16 (maximum age can very on a case-by-case basis).

Ward facilities

Play: There is a playroom with a full range of toys, DVDs, books, a computer and access to the internet. Two dedicated play specialists on ward M3 work with families to prepare and explain to children what is happening to them.

Learning: If your child is expected to stay for more than a few days, one of the teachers will see your child and set work appropriate to needs. The hospital teaching department is available on 0114 271 7151.  There is a schoolroom which is situated off the ward and all children who are well enough can attend. There are dedicated teachers for the ward, enabling the teachers to become familiar with the children.

Other Facilities: A ward kitchenette is available for parents who can prepare food and eat there. Please note that this is more a facility for light meals and snacks and not to prepare a full meal, as there are no actual cooking facilities (oven or microwave) in this kitchenette.

Ward routine

Meal Times: Meals are served by trolley. Breakfast is flexible, lunch is at 12pm and dinner at 5pm. However children are allowed food from the canteen at any time.

Rounds: There is a Doctor's ward round every day.

Visiting times: Visiting is open and brothers and sisters are welcome. Parents are expected to supervise younger visitors and respect the needs of other patients. Stricter visiting rules may come into effect in the near future, at which point visiting will be at the discretion of the nurse in charge .

Accommodation for families

No accommodation can be booked in advance.

One parent is able to sleep next to the bed of their child on a fold-down bed. The hospital has some rooms available for parents to stay located in the ‘Tree Top House’ (separate rooms for parents are limited).  Tree Top House has a TV lounge, laundry facilities, 13 bedrooms and is run by the Sick Children's Trust.

The parents association PACT operate a six bedroomed house as a home-from-home for oncology patients only.  It is based approximately 300 yards from the hospital. Arrangements should be made with the ward staff or PACT Co-ordinator.
