This hospital has a paediatric oncology ward and a teenage cancer unit, although, if your child has a brain tumour, they are likely to be located at the Newcastle General Hospital.

General hospital amenities
Hospital amenities include: the Victoria restaurant, Northern Rock snack shop, a coffee shop, and a newsagent. For parents who are resident on the ward, the restaurant in the Victoria Wing is able to provide meals at staff rate upon receipt of a voucher (available from ward clerk).
The RVI is located very close to Newcastle city centre, making banks, Post Offices, cinemas, supermarkets and high street shops very easily accessible. There are many take-away restaurants locally which can deliver the hospital. Leazes Park is located five minutes from the hospital; there is a boating lake and play area.

Train: The closest mainline station is Central station. Metro is available for travel from Central station.
Bus: Buses run by Stagecoach leave from Newgate Street in the centre of the city. This is a five minute walk from Central station.
Parking on site: On site car parking is available and readily accesible.

General: Ward 16 – Paediatric Oncology & Teenage Cancer Unit (TCU).
No. of Beds: There are 14 beds on the ward. The ward is made up of cubicles, beds and the teenage cancer unit.
Age Range: 0-21

Play: There is a play therapist on the ward to assist the children in play and activities. A play area on the ward is very well equipped with toys and books. In the TCU the children have access to the children have access to the internet, computers, and a pool table. A kitchen and lounge is available in the TCU which also has TV and video.
Learning: Hospital teachers go onto the wards at both the RVI and Newcastle General.
Other Facilities: A day unit is attached to the ward. It is equipped with toys, TV and a video player. There are facilities for washing and drying clothes during inpatient stays.

Meal Times: The meals are at set times and are delivered by trolley. However there is a kitchen on the ward and food can also be purchased at the restaurant and hospital shops. There is a trolley service that operates daily to the children’s ward offering confectionery, newspapers etc.
Rounds: These are regular and are carried out once every morning and afternoon.
Visiting Times: Open visiting is in place, although within reason.

One parent is able to sleep next the child’s bed. However there is additional accommodation at Crawford House, run by the Sick Children’s Trust. This is accessed via ward staff on admission. It should be noted that this is for parents of children under the age of 16.
