General hospital amenities

The following amenities can be found in the hospital: shops and stalls with gifts, flowers, magazines, sweets and books – located in the main entrance to the hospital, a sandwich shop and a restaurant, a cashpoint, courtyard gardens and pay phones. There is a post box in the main entrance to the hospital and post is collected at 5.30pm. If you are unable to get to the post box, please speak to a member of the ward team.

In nearby Heavitree there are supermarkets, takeaways, banks, Post Offices, chemists, a launderette and video hire shop. The nearest cinema is in the city centre.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Exeter Central and Exeter St David's stations are about three miles from the hospital. Stagecoach buses H1 & H2 run to Wonford Hospital from Exeter St. David's and from Exeter High Street, which is fairly close to Central station.

Bus: Stagecoach buses H1 and H2 run to Wonford Hospital every 15 minutes or so from the high street in the city centre.

Parking on Site: All families of children on treatment are loaned a parking permit for the ‘disabled’ car park. It does get very busy though, and the permit does not guarantee a space. You can also use your blue badge if you have one.

Ward details

General: General Paediatric Ward – Bramble Yellow Section (for Paediatric Oncology Unit).

No. of Beds: There are two isolation cubicles and seven other cubicles in the section.

Age Range: 0-18, depending on when the illness was diagnosed.

Ward facilities

Play: There is a playroom, but generally children need to be accompanied by an adult. The playroom is a particularly pleasant area with a covered outdoor section. Two play specialists are on hand for the children and they also take play to the children in bed.

Learning: Education is provided on the ward by the hospital school, who will liaise with your child’s school. If home tuition is required, a referral will be made. Two schoolrooms exist with two dedicated teachers; if the child is unable to attend, teaching can take place by the bed. Writing materials and other facilities exist in the school room. It should be noted that education is not provided after the age of 16.
 
Other Facilities: Internet is available in some cubicles and there is a portable Playstation which can be manoeuvred around the ward. Facilities for teenagers can be fluid and may be shaped around the patients needs at the time. There is a kitchen in the parents’ room, with a microwave and other simple amenities. top of page

Ward routine

Meal Times: Lunch is at midday although breakfast and supper are on a more flexible basis.

Rounds: Oncology specialists will see the children on the ward at specific times each day.

Visiting Times:  Open visiting – at the discretion of the ward staff. Particular attention must be given in regard to hygiene. You must wash your hands before entering the ward.

Accommodation for families

A fold-down bed for a parent is available in the cubicle. A parents’ unit is available on the ward with separate bedrooms, basic kitchen facilities and a sitting room. Generally children are treated in cubicles and a bed for a parent is available in the cubicle.

Additional information

Domiciliary Care: This is facilitated by the CLIC Sargent nurses and your CLIC Sargent care professional. Torbay has a Community Paediatric Team that can also offer support.

Palliative Care: This is provided by CLIC Sargent nurses using local resources as necessary.
