General hospital amenities

The Children's Hospital has a Newsagents/Convenience store, Superdrug, restaurant and Starbucks-style cafe.

There are payphones and parents' day rooms on most floors.

The children's hospital is linked to the main John Radcliffe site via a corridor on level 2.  The main hospital homes further newsagents, cafes and a restaurant, as well as post box and cash machine.

Most other facilities one would need can be found in Headington, a leisurely 10 minute walk from the hospital.  Headington has takeaways, banks and supermarkets as well as a bakery, chemist, and cafes.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Oxford Railway station is 3.5 miles from the hospital, near the centre of the city. It is 30 minutes by bus number 14 (direct bus) to the hospital. Allow 15 to 20 minutes by taxi from the station forecourt to the hospital. 

Bus: There are frequent direct bus services between the hospital and Oxford City centre, and also to Headington centre, which is a 10-minute walk away. Bus timetables are usually available from the main hospital reception on Level 2 and reception in the Women's Centre. However the most direct bus route to take is the No. 13, which leaves from St Aldates in the centre.
 
Park & Ride Bus Service: The nearest park & ride is Thornhill, on the A40 one mile east of Headington. The bus service is the 400 which stops in Headington centre about 10 minutes walk from the John Radcliffe. Monday-Saturday frequency is every 10 minutes. The bus journey takes 5-8 minutes.
 
Parking on Site: The main Children's Hospital car parks are next to and under the hospital and are signposted. Payment is required as you leave the hospital. 
 
Disabled Parking: Parking for blue badge holders and areas for setting down and collecting patients are available close to the entrances, in car parks 1 and 2 and opposite the Level 2 entrance to the main hospital and maternity entrance to the Women's Centre. top of page

No. of Beds: Day 3 isolation rooms, 2 further rooms, and a four bedded inpatient bay.  There is a separate day care area.

Age Range: 0-18

Ward facilities

Play: There is a play room on the ward which is primarily focused around the toddler to 8 year old age group. A range of toys and activities are available, such as paints, games and crafts. There is also a play specialist to assist the children in developmental play and occasionally other entertainment, such as a magician. An outdoor play area suitable for children up to the age of around 6 exists two minutes away from the ward. There are also Playstations in the rooms as well as X-boxes and DVDs.
          
Provision for teenagers on the ward is limited, but improving and there are additional resources in adjacent wards that patients are welcome to use. These include an adolescent lounge and ktichen specifically for oncology patients on the adolescent ward (Melanie's ward).

Learning: There is a school on the ward that has three dedicated teachers. It operates around normal school hours of 9:30am to 3pm. Learning can take place in dedicated classrooms or IT rooms or take place by the bedside. Teachers will also liaise with the child’s school for schoolwork. 

Other Facilities:

Just outside the ward there is a parents' day room where hot drinks can be made and meals heated up.  There are also facilities to take a break and make phone calls here.

On the ward, every inpatient has access to a TV, telephone and fridge.  We are eagerly awaiting our new wireless connection and flat screen TV's for all the rooms, to assist with ongoing education and maintaining contact with friends and family while in hospital.

Ward routine

Meal Times: Flexible, from a dedicated menu of both hot and cold options.

  
Rounds: Informal and usually in the morning.   

Visiting: Open visiting policy, but ideally only two visitors at a time.  If visitors have been in contact with chicken pox, measles or shingles, they are asked not to come on the ward due to risk of infection.  Unfortunately flowers are not allowed on t he ward due to infection risk.

Accommodation for families

There is availability for every inpatient to have one parent sleeping in the bay or their room - either on put up beds or on sofas that convert into a bed. 

A CLIC Sargent home from Home offers free accommodation for families.  The home comprises 5 bedrooms of various sizes and includes a large communal lounge, the ever popular playroom, teenagers room and garden.  Fridge, freezer, cooking and washing facilities are available.
